DOME opens a place to test fueled microreactors
DOE’s April announcement creates testing capacity at Idaho National Laboratory; it does not certify a commercial reactor fleet.

The Department of Energy announced on April 8, 2026 that construction of the Demonstration of Microreactor Experiments facility, or DOME, was complete at Idaho National Laboratory. The announcement marks the availability of test infrastructure for privately developed reactors.
DOME is designed for fueled experiments generating up to 20 megawatts of thermal energy. That is a test-bed capacity expressed as heat, not a promise that each experiment will generate 20 megawatts of electricity. Electrical conversion and any particular reactor’s output require their own evidence.
A facility milestone with practical value
Testing infrastructure is a dependency shared by otherwise different developers. A suitable location can let a team gather information that a component demonstration or computer model cannot supply by itself.
Our interpretation is that DOME’s opening should be assessed as an improvement in the development process. It creates somewhere to conduct experiments; the outcomes still depend on the individual campaign. Facility readiness and reactor readiness should occupy separate lines in a project schedule.
The April release named Radiant’s Kaleidos Demonstration Unit as the first campaign. Its startup timing was a forecast in that announcement. This retrospective does not treat the forecast as evidence that startup subsequently occurred.
Access is not the whole test plan
A credible campaign still needs defined objectives, an authorized configuration, appropriate fuel and resources to complete the work. The broader DOE Reactor Pilot Program provides context for how departmental demonstration work fits into current development efforts. Its authorization framework is not a universal commercial operating license.
For a project partner, the most useful question is what decision the proposed experiment will enable. Will it resolve a design uncertainty, support a filing or qualify a component for a later campaign? Without that link, even a busy test schedule can be difficult to interpret.
Track results as well as access
An announcement that a developer has a testing slot is valuable. Evidence that the developer entered the facility, completed a specified test and incorporated the findings is more informative about progress.
DOME therefore belongs in the sector’s infrastructure story. It may help several projects move through development, but its opening should not be counted as several reactors entering commercial service. The next meaningful updates are campaign-specific and should preserve that distinction.
